An architectural miracle
The temple of Artemis
The temple of Artemis in Calydon was the second most important sanctuary in Aetolia (only the temple of Apollo in Thermo could compare with it in significance). The temple occupies the top of a hill outside the city walls. The first edifice was erected at the end of the 7th century. It was made of wood, and had clay decorative elements painted in white, black, yellow, and red. The temple was rebuilt in stone in the 5th century BCE. There is almost nothing left of the temple but the massive retaining wall on which the temple stood remains almost intact; this was always, in fact, the most impressive feature of the sanctuary and it may have cost more to build than the temple itself.
