A Who’s who of the Sortie
The Garden of the Heroes
The Garden of Heroes includes 69 monuments commemorating Greeks and foreigners who fought in Missolonghi, as well as many plain crosses that belong to members of the garrison. Many notable figures are honored here with a statue or a simple plaque. Michael Kokkinis, who built the wall and designed the bridges used during the Sortie; Johann Jakob Meyer, who published a newspaper throughout the siege and contributed to the founding of the first military hospital; the elder Christos Kapsalis who threw a lit torch on the gunpowder when the enemies were at his door; and the Philhellenes, whose participation in the struggle for Greek freedom is commemorated with a towering sculpture of stone, broken cannons, and cannonballs.
