Casanova enrolled at the university of Padua to pursue a career in the Church. This was a desirable path for impecunious aristocrats and young men who had been educated far beyond their social position. Life was sweet but Giacomo soon ran up so many debts that he was forced to start selling his possessions to pay them off. When money run out, he asked his grandmother for more. She arrived in Padua, pulled him out of the university and brought him back to Venice. On 14 February 1740, the 15-year-old Casanova was formally inducted into the Roman Catholic Church by Giovanni Tosello, the local priest at the Church of San Samuele.
