The orphanage
The Hadjikiriakio Orphanage
he Hadjikiriakio Girls Orphanage occupies the tallest hill in Piraeus. It was established with a donation by Ioannis Hadjikiriakos, a cotton merchant from Smyrna, and his wife Marigo Dimitropoulou. The municipality of Piraeus, at the suggestion of the mayor Tryfon Moutzopoulos, agreed to provide the land (8.6 acres) free of charge. Old maps identify the orphanage’s location as a quarry. There is still a stone quarry within the property’s boundaries used by the Ministry of Culture to provide stones for archaeological restoration projects.
